Notices: Term 1, Week 7

 Kia Ora Whanau

We hope this email finds you fit and well, it is certainly a very strange and unknown time for everyone.  In the classroom we are working hard to create an environment that is safe for our team.  Where our tamariki feel comfortable in a familiar routine with us and their peers.  Where they have a voice, value diversity, have empathy and consider others.  We are talking about kindness and what that looks like a lot.

We continue to see and hear some of our tamariki using unkind words towards one another along with putting their hands on one another when frustrated or upset.

We are working on appropriate strategies when they feel this way e.g use your words, walk away, talk to an adult.  These steps are bor both the giver and the receiver of these behaviours.  This is something we know our whanau value as well so if we could have that same message shared at home that would be a huge help.

Consequences for Actions

Due to the above we have started a new system in our class where the tamariki will be involved in a process where they reflect on their behaviour.  The process involves some time out from their peers and all distractions.  Once they have reached a place where they are calm and able to reflect, they are asked to fill out a form that they later discuss with us then yourselves at home.  See the form below.

Please note:  If this is a major incident you will be contacted by us via email with more detail.

Crazy Sock Day

On Wednesday 23rd Arrowtown School is holding a Crazy Sock day to raise money for World Down Syndrome day.  It would be awesome if the tamariki could wear the most crazy, colourful, mismatched socks and bring along a gold coin donation for this very important cause.

Oral Language/News

This term our learning focus is ‘Our Stories’.  Our oral language/news will be an opportunity for the tamariki to tell their own personal stories through a variety of different prompts e.g. their likes and dislikes, goals, friends and whanau. Most weeks we will be sending home a simple sheet or activity  (in your child’s book bag) for your child to complete. We will be compiling these sheets each week and creating a book that will share each child’s unique and individual story. We ask that your child be the one to complete these with support when needed. Part of learning is having the confidence to give things a go and we find this is a great way to build that confidence. If necessary, please feel free to write underneath your child’s writing for clarification purposes.

Below you will find our oral language/news topics for next week and your child’s day to share.  It is important that your child is ready to roll on their day as it is unlikely they can be caught up later in the week.  The prompt your child needs to do their news is in their bookbag.  Please send completed copy back in your child’s bookbag before their given news day.

Week 7 - Goals-  What are some personal goals you have set for yourself this year e.g. learn to ride a bike, save enough pocket money for a new toy, make it to the top of Tobins. Complete this week’s sheet with your goals and steps you’ll take to achieve them.  We can’t wait to see what goals you have set for yourself!

Please note: The Community sheet found in your child’s book bag.

Te Reo Moari Language - Word/Statement

Each week we will share the statement or word we are learning in the classroom.  If you use it at home as well we can all learn together.

For week one we will be learning three Maori greetings…

Kia ora (Key-or-ra) - Hello

Morena (More-re-na) - Good morning

Ata Marie (R-ta-ma-ree-ay) - Good morning

Learner Quality

Each week we will share the learner quality focus from our G.O.L.D characters.  This term we will be focusing on the G (Guardianship) and our learner quality for week one is…

“Show empathy, consider others and value diversity”

Sunhats

We still have tamariki arriving without of losing their wide brimmed hat.  This is something they need to have each day in their school bag.

Clothing

We ask that the tamariki are sun smart and are dressed appropriately for the conditions.  Covered shoulders please.  Please name all of your children’s clothing.

Sunscreen

Please apply sunscreen to your child before they come to school in the morning.  Sunscreen is then offered again at lunchtime.  Please help your tamariki practice putting on sunscreen at home so they know how to when the time comes.

Class Blog

Our class blog can be found here R1 and R2 Blog. This is a great resource for you to use at home.
