Kia Ora Whanau
Week has seen the start of some very cold mornings. Please ensure your child has what they need to keep them warm as we do go outside for periods of the day and a warm child is a happy child.
We have noticed an improvement across the class in terms of looking after our classroom equipment. We are putting a big emphasis on this and appreciate your support from home.
This Week's Notices…
Miss Lynn’s First Week
Jessie/Miss Lynn has had her first week with us this week. Jessie has been getting to know the team as well as the ins and outs of our classroom. Our tamariki have welcomed her with open arms and are forming relationships with her quickly. Jessie officially starts on Monday 30th of May.
BSLA
We are receiving feedback from Whanau that they would like more readers/texts coming home each week. We are not going to send a reader/text home for the sake of it as it means nothing to your child. Each day your tamariki have a small targeted group session with us where we go over target sounds, target words and new vocabulary. There is a lot of teaching that goes into a text before it comes home to you. When your child does bring home a book they should be able to decode and read it to you. The reason it may seem easy is because of the teaching that has gone into it. Rather than focus on having a different reader/text each day here are some things you can be working on at home…
Readers can be enjoyed for more than one night - lots of opportunity for discussion and practice.
It’s ok to just read the book to your child if they are tired.
Retell stories focusing on the beginning, middle and end.
Talk about new vocabulary.
Have a conversation about the story - take turns and keep the conversation going.
Read quality children’s story books with your children.
Let your children see you read for information and enjoyment.
Use the weekly HERO posts to guide you with to dos at home..
BSLA Whanau Workshops
We are holding a BSLA Whanau Workshop which Shirley Forrest will lead on the following dates and times. Shirley will be going over the research behind what we are doing, the resources we are using and how you can help at home.
Tuesday 31st May at 5pm
Thursday 2nd June at 9am
If you would like to know more please pop these dates in your calendar now.
Pink Shirt Day
Next Friday the 20th of May it is Pink Shirt Day. Arrowtown School will show its support for Pink Shirt Day by asking our Tamariki and Kaioko to wear an item of pink clothing and bring a gold coin donation. This year the focus is being an ‘Upsatnder’ which is different to previous years when it was just about anti-bullying. Being an upstander is more proactive than anti-bullying. It means you are actually doing something about the bullying - you are standing up to the bullies.
Parent Connects
It has been awesome to catch up with some of our awesome Whanau this week. It’s always great to hear your perspectives and work together to give our tamariki the best possible start to their schooling. We appreciate your support.
If you have not yet booked your time see the link below to do so
